| QUICK AND IMPORTANT BREED FACTS
1) The Husky and Malamute can never be allowed to go off leash, no matter where you go, or if it's just in the front yard they must be on leash at all times. Most are master escape artists and will run if given the opportunity. For that reason they never be left unattended by open doors or gates. Some Huskies and Malamutes can be door dashers as well, and will take off through an open door with you standing there. Many Huskies and Malamutes are stolen or killed from being hit by cars each year do to escaping from their backyards, walking unleashed ect. Even the most obedient Husky or Malamute can never be trusted.
3) Huskies and Malamutes have a 2 layer coat, a top coat and under coat. They will blow coat 2-3 times a year depending on weather. When I say blow, they will literally lose clumps of hair. The rest of the months they shed the minimal amount. However during the blowing coat seasons be prepared for trash bags of hair!! If you're not a big hair fan, die at the site of white hair on a black shirt, or a hair in your dinner taco a Husky and Malamute is not the breed for you. You will notice that your Husky and Malamute keeps itself very clean. They are a breed of dog that do not smell doggish and are very cleanly animals. 4) If not socialized starting from a puppy, your Husky or Malamute will not be able to be around cats or small dogs. Huskies and Malamutes are a prey animal and will kill cats and small dogs. You must be responsible and properly socialize your Husky and Malamute at an early age to tolerate small dogs and cats if they are to be around them. We highly recommend that even if you not have small breed dogs that they be properly socialized with them should you encounter one on your daily walk, or evening stroll. You will not be able to suddenly make a 3 or 4 year old Malamute or Husky best friends with a cat. Instead they will think of it as a great new squeaky toy! 5) Huskies and Malamutes dig, if you are the garden and lawn proud, do not get a husky. Just a warning to those who love their yard. Ways of helping this issue is buying a kidding pool and filling it with dirt, or water and teach it to dig there. You can also give them their own special digging spot in the yard. The kiddy pool is also a terrific idea for those hot summer months and helping to keep your pet cool. Remember this will not solve the digging but help the issue. 6) Huskies and Malamutes are very energetic. They love to go for walks, and play. If your Husky or Malamute does not get enough exercise it will create it's own, whether chewing, becoming more destructive or jumping the fence to create it's own activity. We recommend having two canines for this reason. It keeps them happy and busy all day long. You do not have to feel bad leaving alone your dog during play, errands, or work as they will always have a friend to keep them company and busy with play. 7) Huskies and Malamutes are a pack animals, and an animal true to it's instinct. I highly recommend reading about the breed before jumping into a Husky or Malamute. Go to your local Petsmart to get yourself a breed information book. Know that your Husky and Malamute will see you as a member of their pack. You will need to show them first off who is the alpha so they do not show you how they can become King of the house. Be the dominate figure of the house, set down guidelines, stay consent and show it with love. Going to obedience / puppy training classes with the whole family is a great way of showing your dog where he/she belongs in the family pack order and helps in creating a bond. Remember a trained dog equals a happy owner!
8) If you are looking for a dog that will follow your every whim and command better look at a Labrador or German Shepherd. The Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky "lives with you NOT for you". They are very intelligent animals and so they choose what they feel like listening and who they hear calling them. Treat training is an excellent training tool with your Husky and Malamute. Remember that these breeds get bored easily so keep the training sessions short and fun.
10) The Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute is not a guard dog. If you are looking for a guard dog to scare off prowlers and off the wall individuals better look to another breed. These breeds prefer to greet burglars and strangers with a delightful "wuuu wuuu" and a kiss rather then ward them off with protective barking. Some people can find their looks and size intimidating however if they knew the truth about their gentleness they would be surprised.
11) The Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute do not bark, they talk. They make a sound similar to Chewbacca in a wuuuu wuuuuu. They do this when happy, excited, talking back or arguing with their owners (no mom I don't want to lay down now) or whenever they feel like expressing emotions. They Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute can pick up a barking type noise when being in with other breeds that do bark, however they will never truly bark.
